Most important problem
in PDF workflows

The biggest problem in PDF workflows for print production is certainly the topic of color. Often there are surprises after printing because the printed colors do not meet the expectations.

PDF/X files have a mandatory output intent but often the color spaces of the objects in PDF/X documents do not match the output intent.

This can be checked very easy with the Color Preflight of the PDFX-ready Online Tools.

Since this happens frequently and the reason is often lack of know how I have decide to create a seminar entitled PDF Color Management (for now only in german). This will be offered at the usual places in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The first seminar will take place in Olten on 31.8.17.

25 years PrePress-Consulting
Stephan Jaeggi

PrePress-ConsultingOn January 15th, 1992 the foundation of my company PrePress-Consulting Stephan Jaeggi was published in the Commercial Register of canton Basel-Landschaft. Despite the fact that preparation work started earlier this marks the offical beginning of my company.

At the beginning my goals was to cover the entire prepress area. I have supported my customers in the evalution and introduction of new hard- and software (from editorial systems to imagesetters). I also did process optimisation and database publishing projects. But soon this became too much to cover and in 1996 I decided to concentrate my activities to the upcoming PDF technology. At the same time I started with my first PDF seminars.

PDF/X-1a is 15 years old!

On December 1st 2001 ISO has published the first ISO standard for prepress data exchange based on PDF (PDF/X-1a:2001). This allowed for the first time a reliable exchange of prepress data with CMYK and spot colors.

This standard has served well for many years. But with the advent of transparency in many layout applications the use of PDF/X-1a (and also PDF/X-3) became problematic since these old standards request a mandatory transparency flattening. This often leads to objects splitted in (many) pieces or even a conversion of object types (text becomes vector or even image) which makes processing these files difficult.

PDF/X-1a is a 15 year old data format which is not suitable for pages created with modern layout applications!

Look back to 2015 and outlook to 2016

Jaeggi2_84x88In the beginning of 2015 my project at Novartis Pharma (global introduction of PDF/X-4 for all pharma packaging) has come to a successful end. That gave me more time for other things like building On march 9th, 2015 my new internet presence was officially started. The number of visitors is steadily increasing. Until now almost 300 blog posts in english and german have been posted.

In summer I could support a big german publishing group with the introduction of PDF/X-4. It was relatively easy since I had already introduced PDF/X-1a at this company a couple of years ago.

In addition I have invested a lot of time for the preparation of my new seminar PDF Master Class II (for now only in german). This seminar is very successful. The first seminars took place almost everywhere in full seminar rooms. On some locations additional seminars had to be organized. Since then I have constantly updated the seminar. I have also integrated Acrobat DC after the release. This seminar will be offered again at most locations this year.

For 2016 I will resume my PDF/X-4 seminars. During consulting and discussions with users I am often surprised that a lot of companies still don’t use this standard (introduced already in 2008!). At the same time they report problems with flattened transparency – but don’t think about trying PDF/X-4. A lot of them say “we have been using PDF/X-3 since 10 years – why should we change something?”. Those people have not realised that during the last ten years the technology for creating PDF (direct pdf export instead of Distiller, transparency, layers, etc.) and for PDF output (native PDF RIPs) has evolved dramatically. Using a 15 year old data format does not allow to benefit from these new technologies. Those who have not yet switched to PDF/X-4 should consider attending one of my PDF/X-4 seminars. (Unfortunately currently only available in german.)
