In September 1999, when the first pure PDF workflow system «Prinergy» was introduced by Heidelberger Druckmaschinen and Creo (now Kodak), four tutorials on PDF Workflow were published, which I had written for the two manufacturers.
The tutorials were distributed in printed form (I still have some copies in my basement) and as digital eBooks (of course interactive PDFs) in German and English for free download. The interest was very big. I stopped updating the statistics after more than one million downloads (from several platforms).
The publication is divided into four separate parts aimed at different target groups:
- Basics (PDF 1.7 MB)
Introduction to PDF technology (for all readers)
- Management (PDF 1.9 MB)
Economic and organizational aspects of PDF (for managers)
- Creation (PDF 2.1 MB)
Creation of PDF documents (for data suppliers, ad agencies, graphic designers, print buyers)
- Production (PDF 3.7 MB)
Processing and output of PDF files in a printshop (for prepress technicians)
It is astonishing that a large part of the topics are still relevant today. Some points have, of course, (fortunately) changed. It is interesting to see what problems we had to deal with back then (e.g. Duplex or DCS images).
